Stucco is everywhere on Florida homes for good reason: it is durable, attractive, and well suited to our architecture. But our coastal climate is hard on it, and small problems left alone can let moisture into the wall. Catching and fixing stucco issues early is the key to protecting your home. Here is what to watch for and how repair and refinishing works.
Why Stucco Cracks and Fails in Florida
- Humidity and heat: constant expansion and contraction stresses the surface.
- Salt air and storms: coastal exposure and wind-driven rain accelerate wear.
- Settling and movement: normal house settling opens hairline cracks, often near corners and openings.
- Moisture intrusion: the biggest threat — water that gets behind stucco can damage the wall beneath.
Common Stucco Problems
The issues we see most are hairline cracks, wider cracks that need filling and reinforcement, spalling or chipping where chunks break loose, dark staining from moisture or organic growth, and soft or hollow-sounding spots that signal water behind the surface. Each has a different fix, which is why an accurate diagnosis comes first.
The Repair Process
A proper repair starts by removing loose and damaged material and identifying any moisture source. The area is then patched with a compatible stucco mix and textured to match the surrounding finish — the part that takes real skill. After the patch cures, the surface is sealed and painted, often with a flexible elastomeric coating that bridges hairline cracks and helps keep water out.
Preventive Maintenance
A little upkeep goes a long way. Walk your exterior once or twice a year, seal new cracks while they are small, keep the stucco painted and sealed, and make sure gutters and grading direct water away from the walls. Staying ahead of small cracks is far cheaper than repairing water damage later across Clearwater, the Gulf Beaches, and St. Petersburg.
